We at Houston Hula Academy look forward to sharing our culture and teaching you what we have learned, from renowned Kumus like John Pi’i lani Walkins and O’Brien Eselu, who are multiple title winners of the Merrie Monarch. You will be learning the fundamentals from the basics to the advanced body structure movements of the Polynesian dances, learning the history of each island, the native language, and the cultural traditions from the islands of Hawaii, Tahiti, New Zealand, Samoa, Tonga, and Fiji.

Houston Hula Academy is the sister company of Drums of the Pacific, USA, the most exciting Polynesian show and catering in Texas. Family owned and organized by Alisha and her father, Chief Tama with over 30 years of experience in the luau industry creating the 1st Polynesian Academy in Texas.

Meet Our Instructors

Alisha Byrd
Instructor

Alisha started dancing at the age of 2 years old and professionally at the age of 12 years old at the Mai Kai in Florida. Her professional career as a Polynesian dancer continued until she was 29 years old and then became an MC and instructor for Drums of the Pacific USA. Alisha continues her career to reach out and spread the Polynesian culture one hula step at a time.

At the early age of 5 Tama began performing with his family. Chief Tama became a professional dancer by the age of 16 and was under the direction of the famous John Pi’ilani Walkins, the origional ambassador who opened Germaine’s Luau in the late 70’s. He later moved to bigger shows in Waikiki performing with the world famous Don Ho at the Shell, and later with Tihati’s Productions the world’s most prominent and more extended Polynesian entertainment of all Hawaii. In 1986, Chief Tama preformed at another famous landmark the Mai-Kai restaurant in Ft. Lauderdale, FL. For over a decade, Chief Tama has made his home in Houston, TX were he looks to pass on his knowledge and experience to the next generation of performers.

Houston Hula Academy for Hawaiian Dance – Learn to hula

Classes are held twice a week:

Spring Studio
Please contact us for available class hours.

Classes: $15 per hour

Weekly: $45 for 2 days

College students or multiple students (same household), please inquire for special savings.

There is a one-time registration fee of $65 per student.

(1) Pahu Skirt for ladies or (1) Lava-lava for the men (One size fits all)

Polynesian Destinations of Lessons are as follows:

Experience Levels:

  • Beginner
  • Intermediate
  • Advanced Performer Level

The typical timeline to complete all areas of study is a year, about two months per Island. Students learn at a different pace, so full course completion may vary. Upon completing the areas of study, select students have an opportunity to make the advanced performer level.
